Here Be Dragons

Hic Sunt Dracones… a popular saying in the Middle Ages. Denoting dangerous territories on maps to warn navigators.

Here Be Dragons…. but Kilroy has already been there, done that, and will lead you.

Despite the English translation’s iconic nature in film and pop culture, Hic Sunt Dracones appears on only two surviving artifacts, both from the 16th century.

The Hunt-Lenox Globe (pictured in this post) - Created in 1510, Hic Sunt Dracones appears off the coast of Eastern Asia.

The globe’s prototype, made 6 years earlier, also bears the same inscription.
